Sad news today that Scottish actor David McCallum, best known for his roles as secret agent Ilya Kuryakin in Sixties spy-fi The Man From UNCLE and later as pathologist Dr Donald "Ducky" Mallard in the American TV drama NCIS, has shuffled off this mortal coil at the age of 90. www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2023/sep/25/david-mccallum-man-from-uncle-ncis-dies-age-90I can recall many a happy hour spent as a child watching Messrs McCallum and Vaughn as the secretive Men From UNCLE and taking on the characters with a friend after school, as we battled against the evil machinations of THRUSH and perfected our favourite fight move - the "Kuryakin Kick" (whereby one kicks one's assailant in the leg and then, as they bend down to grab the injured limb, karate chop them on the back of their head). I shall raise my glass to Mr McCallum, a quality actor and and all-round good sport whose work over seven decades has brought enjoyment to many.

I was sad to discover only after his death that through his role on NCIS, MR McCallum had become a devotee of the history of Forensic pathology, and delivered lectures on its practice in fact and fiction. He seems to have been an interesting chap and all round good egg, and I shall raise a glass of something suitable in his memory.
