Well, hello and welcome to the club! Some of you may be wondering, not without reason, what this place is all about and in this post I shall attempt to tell you.
Essentially, the original Sheridan Club is (or was) a pre-existing chat room that (just about) can still be found elsewhere on the internet. It was, as far as my understanding goes, originally an official extension of The Chap magazine when it was first created in circa 2004. However it later separated from that organ, while still retaining a link to its views and principles, and subsequently begat The New Sheridan Club - a London-based in-person social club that also still exists (and hence why this place is not called The New Sheridan Club - or even the New New Sheridan Club!).
As the world sleep-walked ever further into the welcoming arms of Messrs Zuckerberg, Dorsey and Musk et al., so The Sheridan Club forum slowly declined from being a place of multiple daily, erudite conversations to a ghostly shell populated by myself and one or two other stalwarts. Think of it now as the online chatroom equivalent of The Last of Us. Thankfully the moderator/ site owner continued to pay the bills to keep the old place running, until a couple of weeks ago when things started to go awry and ended with multiple Internal Server Error messages making the site unusable. Although I still have hopes that things will be put right ere long, this has now happened too many times in recent years. I thereby took it upon myself to open this place. It can be looked upon as a back-up site – a separate, perhaps temporary location (a pop-up, if you will) – or a brand-new start in new premises to continue the good work of that first Sheridan Club.
As such, all are welcome – existing Sheridan Club members and new joiners who share our ethos, our love of all things vintage and old-fashioned. I must stress that this place is entirely my own creation – I do not intend to tread on the toes of anyone still affiliated with the original Sheridan Club, The Chap or The New Sheridan Club. I have borrowed the name and something of the appearance and style of the original Sheridan Club only to provide some degree of continuity with that site, which has provided me with so many happy hours over the last two decades. It may well be that I shall be forced to make some changes here in time but we shall see. For now my aim has been simply to get this place up and running in light of the first Sheridan Club's apparent demise.
While I fully expect to also be the only person here for the foreseeable future I sincerely hope that more will find this place, appreciate its intentions and stay. Do come and join me here then, where we can continue to pass the time of day in suitably chappist manner!
