I have fond memories of watching the early '90s British television adaptation of the Maigret detective novels by Georges Simeon, featuring the late Sir Michael Gambon in the lead role, and have also found the more recent version with Rowan Atkinson as the eponymous French 'tec to be quite enjoyable too. However I have recently discovered the little-known (in the UK, at least) French adaptation - also from the beginning of the Nineties but running for a total of 14 years - starring Belgian actor Bruno Cremer. Their production values are the equal of any British period crime dramas of the era and I can heartily recommend them. Thanks to the wonderful TV channel Talking Pictures I can now regularly watch this splendid essay of Simeon's works (and also brush up my schoolboy French!), which has fast become a firm favourite. For those of you whose French language skills are better than mine, many episodes are also available on YouTube:

Just a word of warning for anyone intending to watch the Bruno Cremer version of Maigret et les plaisirs de la nuit (aka Maigret in Montmarte) - it being both a French production and about the murder of a stripper there is quite a bit of nudity the likes of which would make even the most open-minded Englishman choke over his cup of tea.

I understand well-known French actor Gerard Depardieu is the latest to portray the role, in a 2022 adaptation of the novel Maigret et la jeune morte (Maigret and the Dead Girl). I have yet to see it but from the trailer it looks promising, as far as modern interpretations go:

Ah Depardieu, a wonderful actor but sadly a horrible person. I can see him being a good Maigret however

I can see him being a good Maigret however Ah yes, well - I don't know Mr Departure personally but I have enjoyed his work in the past and agree with your assessment on his portrayal of Maigret. I imagine the recent contretemps involving him is in the news over there as much if not more so than here and although I still hold to the premise of "innocent until proven guilty" it doesn't look to good for him I must admit. Do you think the allegations being made against him are true, then?

I fear so. He's had a reputation for a long time over here. I hope not of course. Time will tell
