Rather surprisingly it seems that chaps called Alfred make good thriller writers, as I have just picked up a book by the fellow whose name forms the title of this thread - another cove from the first half of the 20th century with a fascinating life story thanks to the Great War and one which seems to have stood him in good stead for his subsequent career as a professional writer (mainly but not exclusively focussing on aerial-themed thrillers and non-fiction accounts). Sinister Secret, a later novel from 1956, had me gripped from the first page and hasn't let up yet. Highly recommended, thus far!
